VISAKHAPATNAM: The SBIF XRD Analytical Lab was launched at the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy. SBI Foundation MD Sanjay Prakash attended the event as the chief guest.
Speaking to TOI, Prakash said that the SBI group several years ago has begun identifying additional avenues, such as innovation and research areas, for deploying CSR funding. “These efforts complement ongoing CSR initiatives of SBI in education, health, environment, water management, rural development, and other verticals. This XRD analytical lab at IIPE will be a full-focus project for three years. The project cost of approximately Rs 4 crore covers personnel salaries, maintenance, contingencies, and more. We have executed similar initiatives with IIT Bombay and have projects in the pipeline with IISc Bengaluru and C-CAMP Bengaluru. This is the first time the SBI Foundation has partnered with an educational institution in Andhra Pradesh to extend funding under this research and innovation area,” said Prakash.
Prakash added that researchers and faculty who have used the analytical lab’s machinery are pleased with its innovative technologies and its advantages. “SBI spends 1% of its profits on CSR. As profits increase each year, our responsibility for CSR spending is also rising,” added Prakash.
IIPE Director Prof. Shalivahan said that only a few educational institutions in India possess such equipment. He explained the project’s proposal in 2023 and its subsequent developments. He spoke about the institute’s internationalisation efforts, collaborations with global and national educational institutions, and collaborative research work with industry.
Prof. K Krishnasri explained that the lab’s x-ray diffractometer can be used to analyse a wide range of materials, including powders, thin films, rock samples, and all crystalline substances. “They are used in fields like chemistry, materials science, geology, and pharmaceuticals. The lab will be highly useful for research purposes in energy and petroleum sectors, besides its advantages in various other fields” said Prof. Krishnasri.
Registrar Ram Phal Dwivedi, Dean (R&D) Prof. Vijaya Kumar, and others also spoke at the event.
